Ephesus

A well preserved archaeological site of the Roman Empire. Once the largest harbour city and trade centre of Asia Minor, Ephesus now greets thousand of tourist from all over the world. Imagine walking the streets of 2000 years visiting the Celcius Library, the craftsman's shops, the butchers, and even the brothel also the open air marble toilets!

 

How about taking a seat at the Grand Theatre which has a seating capacity of 25,000! With the acoustics from these amphitheatres still as good as the day they were created its hardly a wonder many a concert is still held there (Sting, Diana Ross and many others).

Even in the smallest villages, one day a week is market day where  a broad spectrum of the community socialize to buy/sell their goods.

 

Anything can be bought at these markets ranging from livestock to carpets and it’s the best place to practice your haggling techniques!

 

Should you find yourselves missing the Saturday market in Didim, no worries! Try the evening market at Mavishir its on every night and is only a five minute trip on the local Dolmush.

Visit Heraklia only 20 minutes drive and Stroll around the village taking in the sights such as Endymon Temple, temple of Athena and the ruins of a Byzantine Castle.

 

The afternoon could consists of a peaceful boat trip on the lake visiting an Island to observe the wildlife. Or possibly a swim or simply a few hours sat on the terrace of one of the many Taverns relaxing with a drink and a locally produced meal taking in the spectacular Scenery.

 

A must for all people who appreciate the beauty of Nature and the wildlife.

An excellent day out for shopping or just relaxing in a Tavern sipping on a cool drink.

Miletos

Miletus

 

Founded long ago in the Mycenaean Era and was famed for its philosophy and science in the 6th century B.C.

The first Urban Design Architect in the whole of the Greek world (Hippodamus) created the  first ever straight lined town plan with right angled street corners!

 

Few ruins have survived, but a must see is the 22,000 seated amphitheatre and the baths of Faustina which had hot air ducts beneath to heat the water!

Pamukale

Pamukale

 

Is known as "Cotton Castle" in English and on seeing the stalactites and the white moon craters filled which effervescent water, you'll want to know more about this incredible natural wonder.

 

Pamukale is also renowned as being a curing centre of skin ailments and digestive problems etc, due to the calcium in its thermal pools.

 

Maybe you should consider taking the time and opportunity to bathe in “Cleopatra's Pool” it's like relaxing in warm champagne...

Apollo Temple didim

Temple of Apollo

 

The Temple of Apollo was one of the largest masterpieces of Hellenistic architecture and measured 60metres x 118meters with a total of 124 columns.

Each column had a diametre of 2mtr and towered over 19mtr in height.

 

In the temple grounds are fragments of its rich decoration including a striking head of Medusa (she of the hair of snakes).

The Temple was destroyed by the Persians in 494 B.C. then rebuilt under the orders of Alexander the Great.

Centuries later it was toppled by an earthquake.

Pillaged for stone by the locals there after and then for statues by the British Museum in 1858.

It now stands beside the main road into Didim.

Translated meaning “Golden Sands” and is the most famous beach in Didim.

A friendly resort where you will find the locals 'laid back' and relaxed in their attitude towards tourists.

 

You will get to know them quickly and they will enjoy nothing better than chatting over a glass of Turkey's famous apple tea.

Don't be surprised if you return year after year to visit your newfound friends.
